On September 3rd, people across the world celebrate International Bacon Day. Yet behind the celebration of this popular food item, torture and brutality exist to supply the bacon industry. Pigs are intelligent, emotional beings who should not be subjected to confinement and abuse. Furthermore, not eating pig products is much better for you and the environment. Pig factories generate huge amounts of raw waste. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, raising animals for food is the number one source of water pollution. Animal agriculture is also one of the greatest contributors to drought.
In a Time Magazine article, Mandy Oaklander writes: “Processed meats are bad news for heart health, since they’re full of sodium and fatty acids. But you have to look beyond the food label to understand how they can cause cancer. During the processing and heating of meats, an array of carcinogenic chemicals form, and those compounds can potentially damage cells.”
